Hey Friend,
People get confused and frustrated with me sometimes. Like, how can I write so clearly and insightfully, but then freeze over something as “simple” as a two-step instruction?
But that’s AuDHD for you. It’s not just glitchy; it’s like a gear locks up.
My brain literally can’t move forward without some kind of workaround or support. It’s like having a leg that gives out every time you try to walk on it. My brain is built with sections more inclined to collide than collaborate.
You can’t “try harder” when you’ve got nothing to try with. Know what I mean? You know how we can be flying in our zone of genius—and then BAM!
We hit something our executive functions have no ability to work with? That moment when an expectation appears so far outside our actual capacity, that we don't stumble into it, we drop. I call that the competence cliff.
To someone who has never experienced this, there always seems to be a lingering doubt about whether its a disability or an excuse.
You know how excruciating it can be to feel inept with something so simple for others, and how vulnerable we feel just admitting it to someone, let alone asking for help with it.
I'm proud of the skills I've gained over the years to help me bounce forward until I find someone who will listen and help. It's usually someone who knows how it feels to eat that dirt vs someone who's only read about it.
Has this ever happened to you?
Thanks for being you,
Brian
P.S. If this hit home, don’t sit in the silence. Book a Power Hour and let’s actually do something about it.
